Open Tools

Bioacoustics tools, scripts, examples, and collaboration opportunities from Animal Chatter.

Open bioacoustic software

This section will catalogue software and reproducible workflows developed for acoustic, behavioural, and vocal-sequence data. A tool will be listed only when its scope, dependencies, example data, validation status, licence, and citation information are documented.

Documentation required for release

Analytical scope

The biological or computational question addressed, the intended input and output, and conditions under which a different method is preferable.

Reproducible example

Installation instructions, versioned dependencies, inspectable input data, expected output, and a complete minimal workflow.

Validation and status

An experimental, stable, or archived designation; tests or validation evidence; known limitations; version information; and the date of the most recent substantive update.

Licence and citation

An explicit software licence, citation guidance, source repository, release archive where appropriate, and instructions for reporting reproducible problems.

Note

Until an individual tool page displays a licence, treat that tool as not yet released for reuse. Public source code without a licence is not automatically open-source software.

Try the tools—or tell me what would help

The tools will be free to use under their stated licences. If something breaks, if you test a workflow on another species, or if you have an idea that would make a tool more useful, please email me. I am especially happy to work closely when a technical problem grows out of a real research question.
