Song and Movement in Budgerigar Courtship

Study objective
The study tests whether particular warble-song note types are associated with specific courtship movements and whether note–movement associations are shared across males or are individual specific.
Data and analysis
The dataset comprised 100 courtship bouts from five males, including 19,934 annotated song notes and 2,154 courtship-related movements. Vocal and movement streams were represented as synchronized sequences to quantify associations between note types and behaviours including head movements, affiliative interactions, and mounting.
Warble segments produced without concurrent body movements provided a comparison for testing whether note-type associations were specific to multimodal display contexts.
Results
Some note–movement associations occurred across all sampled males, whereas others were shared by a subset of males or detected in only one individual. The resulting structure comprised population-level, subgroup-level, and individual-specific associations. In warble segments without body movement, note types had broadly similar occurrence probabilities.
The paper proposes that variation in coordination may be learned or modified through social interaction. Because learning history was not experimentally manipulated, this explanation remains a hypothesis rather than a demonstrated mechanism.
Interpretation
The results identify cross-modal coordination as an additional level of courtship-display organization. Individual-specific note–movement associations could contribute to receiver discrimination, but the study did not directly test what information receivers extract from these combinations.
