Study objective

The study tests whether male–male aggression, display relationships, and dominance position are associated with dyadic similarity in warble syntax and learned contact-call repertoires.

Study design and analysis

Seven males and six females were observed in a captive colony for four weeks, yielding 3,306 annotated directed social interactions. Acoustic analyses included 228 warble sequences and 5,827 contact-call-like notes from six vocalizing males.

Warble syntax was quantified using local sequence alignment, trigram structure, and note co-occurrence. Contact-call similarity was estimated with normalized dynamic time warping; UMAP and density-based clustering were then used to define candidate subtypes. Dyadic and node-level Bayesian models related vocal measures to aggression, display, dominance-rank difference, and network position.

Preliminary results

The colony exhibited a stable, female-biased dominance hierarchy. Warble syntax and contact-call acoustics showed substantial individual structure, including acoustic individuality within candidate subtypes shared by multiple males.

  • Dyads with higher rates of aggression had more similar warble syntax and shared more candidate call subtypes.
  • Dyads with higher rates of mutual display produced more acoustically distinct variants within shared subtypes and a lower proportion of calls assigned to those shared categories.
  • Shared display toward the same female was not associated with a clearly detected acoustic effect.
  • Smaller dominance-rank differences were associated with greater similarity for one syntax measure.
  • Higher-ranking males occupied more connected positions in the candidate call-subtype-sharing network.

Interpretation and alternative hypotheses

The results indicate that learned repertoire structure covaries with competitive as well as display relationships. Aggression-associated similarity could arise through competitive matching, appeasement, shared exposure, or another consequence of repeated interaction; the present design cannot distinguish among these mechanisms.

Display-associated acoustic divergence is compatible with the maintenance of individually distinguishable variants within a shared repertoire, but a signalling function has not been tested. The rank association motivates a network-level dominance-indicator hypothesis in which status covaries with a male’s connectivity in the learned call-sharing network rather than with a single stereotyped call. This remains a hypothesis for experimental evaluation.

Limitations and planned tests

Inference is limited to one captive colony and six acoustically sampled males. One male did not vocalize, and another lacked observations from the final week. Standardized recording contexts did not consistently reproduce naturally observed female-directed relationships. Experimental manipulation of social exposure, dominance relationships, or acoustic similarity is required to test causal direction and assess generality across colonies.
