Mapping the social repertoire
This page documents an active data-integration and annotation workflow. Behavioural categories, provisional call classes, and inferred acoustic–behavioural associations may change as annotation reliability and localization accuracy are evaluated.
Synchronized acoustic localization and video
The grayscale panel shows interacting bats; coloured localization markers estimate sound-source positions, while the panels at right display synchronized acoustic channels and spectrograms. The source screen recording retains its playback controls and audio. These aligned streams support assignment of calls and call combinations to candidate callers and concurrent behaviours.
Localization uncertainty, occlusion, movement, and overlapping calls can all affect caller assignment. The analysis therefore requires explicit confidence criteria and validation against segments in which caller identity is independently recoverable.
Annotation and validation workflow

Localize
Estimate the spatial source of each call while multiple bats can move and vocalize.

Identify
Associate each localized source with an identified individual in synchronized video and record assignment confidence.

Describe
Annotate behaviour, candidate recipient, interaction context, and preceding and subsequent calls.

Test
Test whether call types and transitions improve behavioural prediction relative to models containing timing, caller identity, recipient identity, and interaction context.
Analyses enabled by linked data
- Estimate whether particular call types are enriched at the onset, continuation, or termination of an exchange.
- Model associations between call combinations and approach, contact, grooming, competition, or withdrawal.
- Test whether the behavioural distribution of an acoustic unit depends on recipient identity or preceding sequence context.
- Compare population differences in sequence structure after accounting for behavioural composition and recording design.
- Validate computationally inferred context relationships against annotated behaviour and playback responses.
